I was chatting with a friend and colleague the other day about winter and spring, and generally inspiring “spring forward” thoughts when we detoured into what I call “the box.”
She was working under the belief that her business wasn’t moving forward right now, that she was stuck in the muck of winter doldrums. She put herself into “the box” of a fixed belief.
Of course she had “evidence” to support her belief – but after a few important questions it appeared that she wasn’t looking at the right “facts” that would get her to a different conclusion.
1 + 1 DOES = 2
BUT – maybe you should be looking at “5 + 5 = 10” instead.
The facts you “assess” to come to a conclusion aren’t always the RIGHT facts to be looking at.
Recently I sent out a tool that I use for budgeting and financial planning in life and business because it was the right set of facts that another client needed in order to really see the holes in her financial picture. It was an eye opener for her – what she thought was “okay” was really the source of her pain.
What if you are looking at the wrong “data” and have created beliefs about yourself and your business that aren’t going to serve your higher vision?
So what do we do?
First, recognize that you are working really hard to keep supporting the box around your beliefs. These generally get called “fixed” beliefs in the world of coaching.
The more powerful way to operate is to be open to change, to be open to growth.
Here’s my personal formula for un-lodging the log jam:
- First, find the place you are feeling stuck.
- Do an inventory of all the “reasons” you are in that box.
- Ask yourself “are all these reasons 100% true, or could there be something else?”
- Now do an inventory of all the ways you are winning outside of, or beyond, your “reasons”
- What might also be possible? What might other people see about this situation that you don’t feel internally?
Usually, at this point I’ve poked enough holes in my “belief” that the box is starting to break up and I’m rolling with all kinds of inspiration and freedom.
Still in the box?
- Who do you aspire to be like/admire that is crushing your goal right now?
- What makes them so good at winning? List all those amazing traits/skills.
- Now show yourself how these same skills show up in yourself. We can’t see something in another person that we don’t already have in ourselves. You are NO different!!
You can’t help but find a new path forward!
