So today I had all kinds of plans, and then I got the call at noon that there was a grass fire that started on a hill somewhat close to my house.
Plans changed.
I went home. I drove like a crazy person mentally reviewing the “evacuation plan” because I have dogs and chickens and a guinea pig and a house full of stuff that I would prefer not to lose, but only a handful of things I don’t want to live without.
My computer is on the list right below the pets – because that’s my business.
My evacuation plan has a piece in it for work.
If you don’t have a plan – evacuation/ emergency – make one. Figure out what you need to take with you, and where you need to get yourself and what you will need to do in order to keep your business running.
I’m watching friends and peers on FB who have gone through hurricanes in TX and FL who are STILL working, despite not having internet in their homes or being evacuated to other parts of the state.
Crap happens, and it’s easier to deal with if you have a plan!
Fortunately, it’s night now, and the fire is contained, no one lost a home this time. I can rest easy tonight knowing I didn’t have to pack my household out or be waiting for the announcement.
So – if you don’t have a plan, make one! If you don’t know how, ask. Don’t reinvent the wheel and make it harder than it has to be, or so hard that you don’t do it.
Plan for your business in the disaster.
And wherever you are tonight, I hope it is restful and uneventful.
