A few years ago I went to a multi-day event where I had to complete an “intake” form prior to participation. The form included a spot for our “titles” and “description” that we were using at that moment.
The host of the event clearly read them, or at least some of the 100+ forms because early in the event he was up on stage mocking my job title. He didn’t use names, so I wasn’t called out directly, and it’s possible that others in the crowd used the same title at the time, but he stood there, for several minutes ranting about how stupid it was to use that title. I just knew, down to my toes, that he was wrong.
Needless to say, I didn’t feel great… actually, I wanted to leave the room but since I was there with other people, I stayed.
In case you are wondering, I don’t use that title any longer – my business changed focus and since I believe evolution is good, I found something I felt was a better fit for where I was now.
So why the trip down memory lane? Because last week a FB ad came across my feed where that “expert” – who mocked my title mercilessly – was now using that very same title to describe his services today.
The point I want to make with this story is YOU HAVE TO TRUST YOURSELF and sometimes not believe the experts. They are human too – and they may have experience but their success is their very own karma, or path, or magic mix of success dust and while it’s true that following someone’s else success recipe may make your journey easier or faster, you still have to take the time to do a gut check and decide for yourself what is going to work for you AND THEN GO DO IT!
I am not telling you to discard every piece of advice and go off and build your own wheel, but I am saying that there are times where you are going to hear very successful people tell you things and your gut is going to go “OH HELL NO!” – and when that happens do a reality check, because whatever that thing is might not be the way for you after all.
I’d love to hear about experiences you have had where the “expert” said something that you just knew wasn’t true for you. Email me or leave me a comment on FB.
