So I sat down today to write a really nice post about having passion in your business to support the systems and dedication that it takes to make it profitable, but honestly, I’m just tired from all the stressful news from around the country.
# I’m following news of my friends in Texas, who are watching their streets become rivers.
# Over the weekend, I had news updates every 15 minutes for fear of the conflict that happened in Berkeley, fearing for friends and family in the area.
# In California, we are in the middle of fire season, which is always tough but this year has seemed particularly rough on family and friends.
And then I remembered I am not the only person having news fatigue.
If you are a sole practitioner who is out to help people, you are probably also sensitive to the world around you.
The challenge is how to keep your business moving forward despite all the distractions and energetic leaching.
I talked briefly about this in a video last week, with the help of my chickens; you can catch it here .
Here are four ideas to keep momentum:
- Just take a small action – even if it’s only 25% of what you think you “should” be doing – just do SOMETHING, and then celebrate that you did what you said you were going to do.
- Keep your “to do” list to only the top 3 money making activities. Then only work off that list. Don’t let yourself be distracted by other things that call to you or look more appealing to do right now.
- Plan your week: take 30 minutes at the start of your week to lay out what you have to do (social media schedule, sales targets, client times) and sketch out when you will do each thing. I find it easier to handle my marketing and client interactions when I know in advance what I will be delivering every day.
- Schedule time in your week to connect to why you are doing this work. Sit quietly for 15 minutes and think about who you are helping, and what it means to their lives if you are serving them. Write in a journal about your dreams for your life when your business is successful and also ideas and ways to make your clients lives better.
Clearly, some of these are tactical (or actual things you can do) and some are more mindset (ways to shift your head into the game.)
Whatever it is – don’t let the news of the world, and difficulties outside of your own life distract you from growing your business!
Keep up the good work!
Going out to change lives and make the world a better place now,
Jenell
