I had a conversation with someone today about not her business, but her husband’s. We lamented the fact that his business was doomed to fail despite the fact that he loved what he did.
You see, he’s a great artisan in metal work. He does really amazing and beautiful work on projects – if they are interesting to him.
He turns down work if he thinks it’s beneath his skill level or it’s just not interesting. He doesn’t like marketing or sales, so he doesn’t do much of either. Bookkeeping and record keeping aren’t his “thing” so both of those go neglected.
Instead of working in a creative art he really does enjoy, he spends his day being Mr. Mom or puttering around the house.
As my friend and I sat together, we predicted that within a year he will have to get a job working for someone else, and probably not in his chosen profession.
And here’s where I get really annoyed: another artisanal business will fail because he doesn’t really want to be in business.
The reality of the modern world is that in order to share our work with others, we have to do the work in the business that allows us to express our art.
The world will lose out on his gift because he refuses to find a way to deal with the things he doesn’t want to do for now in order to grow his business to the point where he wouldn’t have to do them anymore.

BONUS FREE TRAINING:
I am going to do a week of Live Stream teaching on FB starting July 24 at 5:30pm PDT. Topics will include cutting down the to-do’s in order to have more time and get more done, sales for the non-sales person, and making your emotions work for you instead of against you.
If you have a topic you would like me to discuss, please drop me a line and I’ll see if I can’t address it.
